What is the difference between the rapid COVID test and the antibody COVID test?

Testing for COVID has tremendous value when it comes to trying to limit
the spread of the COVID virus

Antigen Test

This is a rapid COVID test that detects active COVID infection. A long nasal swab is used to get a sample of your body fluid from your nasal passages. Antigen tests can produce results in minutes.

A positive antigen test result are highly accurate. There is a chance of obtaining false-negative results. In other words, you may possibly to be infected with the virus but have a negative result. It is recommended that a molecular COVID test be obtained to confirm a negative antigen test result.

See what the FDA says about these tests.

Antibody Test

This is a rapid test that detects the antibodies made by our body’s response to COVID infection or exposure. A lancet is used prick you finger to get a sample of your blood. Antigen tests can produce results in minutes.

A positive antigen test result are highly accurate. There is a chance of losing protective immunity. In other words, it may take weeks for you to obtain antibodies to COVID and the immunity may not last. It is recommended that the COVID vaccine be obtained to prevent immunity from infectio

Frequently Asked Questions

We offer a rapid COVID test, also called an antigen test, which detects proteins from the virus which causes COVID. This type of test is considered very accurate in those individuals who are currently experiencing symptoms of COVID. Rapid tests allow public health to detect disease sooner, decrease spread faster and start contact tracing earlier.

We also offer a rapid antibody test which detects the current immunity from the virus which causes COVID. This type of test is considered very accurate in those individuals who are suspect they have been exposed to COVID but are not exhibiting symptoms of COVID currently.

• Persons within close contact of a positive case should be tested three to five days after exposure.
• Persons traveling within the United States and certain countries.
• Individuals in certain high risk groups and vulnerable populations
   o Congregate living settings
   o First responders
   o Healthcare workers
o Older adults and individuals with underlying health conditions
• Individuals with COVID like illness symptoms

A representative will call you and send you an email confirmation the day of specimen collection with your result.
If you have a positive test result, it is very likely that you have COVID. There is a very small chance that this test can give a positive result that is wrong (a false positive result). If you are concerned about this, you should return for follow-up PCR testing.

A negative test result means that proteins from the virus that causes COVID were not found in your sample. It is possible for this test to give a negative result that is incorrect (false negative). This means that possibly you could still have COVID even though the test is negative. The amount of antigen in a sample may decrease the longer you have symptoms of infection. Specimens collected after you have had symptoms for more than seven days may be more likely to produce a negative result.

In both the rapid antigen test and rapid antigen and flu combo test, specimens are collected using a nasal swab. A swab is inserted into each nostril, one side at a time, approximately one inch. The swab is then rotated around the inside of each nostril, approximately five times, to gather mucous and perform the test.

In the antibody test, specimens are collected using a fingerstick. A lancet is used to prick the finger and obtain blood. The blood sample is then extracted to perform the test.

CDC recommendations suggest that persons with COVID symptoms who are negative to have a PCR test completed. PCR testing should be done if symptoms persists, and you have had a negative rapid test. This is especially true if you have had a direct exposure (meaning closer than 6 feet of an individual for more than 15 minutes) to someone who has tested positive for COVID. If you are concerned about this, you should obtain a follow-up PCR test.

Rapid test results will be available the day of specimen collection, usually within 1-4 hours.

At this time, rapid COVID tests are being covered at no cost by most insurance plans using our drive through testing. There is a charge for the white glove concierge COVID testing service at your location.

I understand that results that fall outside the “normal” range may not indicate disease. You will be encouraged to seek medical attention for additional follow up.

There is always a small possibility of an error or failure in laboratory testing. This is inherent to complex testing in any laboratory. Extensive measures are taken to avoid these errors. False negative results can have two possible meanings. First, a person can be infected, but their body has not yet produced the appropriate indicators to detect infection. Second, a person’s body is producing the appropriate indicators but for some reason the test failed to detect it. A false positive result indicates that you possess the appropriate indicators, when in fact, you do not. Errors could occur due broken equipment, lost specimens, poor climate control, etc.
